REFIRE-MEANT
Why is it that as soon as you hit that “Golden Age” (I hate that term) of 65, that people look and talk to you as if your life is over?
I am 77 and I made a decision not to retire when I turned 65
Someone came up with the idea in 1935 that when we reached 65 then we should retire. 85 years later we still embrace that same idea. Retirement is very overrated.
I am changing the word “retirement” to “REFIRE-MEANT”
Light the FIRE in your gut. What do you want the last 1/3 of your life to be like?
How many times have you heard:
“Oh, now that your 65 you can enjoy retirement, or
“Why aren’t you retiring? “It’s time, you know. You spent your whole life working hard and you deserve to take it easy”.
How about “you should not be working any more, you are taking jobs away from younger people”
This is my favorite:
“It’s time for you to slow down, you’re too old to be working – learn to enjoy retirement
Here’s my answer:
- Don’t tell me what I’m too old for
- Don’t tell me what I should or should not be enjoying
- Don’t tell me I’m taking jobs from younger people, if they were half as good as I am – they would have my job
- AND DEFINITELY don’t tell me I should be taking it easy.
Here’s the challenge:
- You worked all your life to support your family in the “American dream”. Put food on the table, provide a roof over their heads, provide an opportunity for an education, etc., etc., etc.
- Where do you want to go from here? Are you ready to take that energy you have pent up inside of you to the next level? I don’t care how old you are, you have a burn inside of you and we want to get the FIRE lit.
